Why change a habit that works? Well...
For as long as I’ve used a computer with a mouse (because, yes, I’m old enough to have used a computer without one), I had it on the left of the keyboard because, yeah, I’m a lefty. It just felt like the natural thing to do.
I decided the other day to change things around: move the mouse to the right. It may sound trivial but, to me, that’s a big deal: it means I have to relearn how to use that device efficiently.
You may ask me “But why?” and my answer is 2 folds: because I wanted to disrupt my pattern (pretty much like using your other hand to hold your toothbrush so you can be more aware of the present moment but here my intention is really to add some change to the way I do things) and secondly, it might help me be more efficient in some tasks since the way most shortcuts and key bindings are setup are meant for right-handed people.
Having to learn all over again how to use the mouse is half struggle, half fun, I’d say: it sounds worst than it really is. Pretty much like jumping into a new situation where you have no idea how to do something but you push yourself to do it anyway. It’s scary, It’s fun. I like it.
Sometimes, in order to grow, you might need to do what seems counterintuitive at first. Again, trying harder to get out of my comfort zone in the name of efficiency.
What do you think? Let’s talk!
